xp12d -- IMPRESSIVE --

Postby 12listen4 on Mon Jul 17, 2006 6:00 am

We had a customer last week that had been to another shop around and purchaced a Pioneer 3004 12" . In 2 days he poped 3 subs. He came by the shop to see what we could do for him and I put him into an Exile xp12d. He had an Audio enhancers single 12 slot ported enclosure and using a Bazooka 500.1 . The exile was much louder right off the bat and he kinda laughed and said we will see if lasts through the night. That was wed and I called him sat evening to see how it was going. The first thing he told me was that he actually tried to blow the sub after he left just to proove a point. He is bringing his girlfriends car by today to get one for her.

GREAT PRODUCT GUYS.

he'll do well to blow one of them if its set up properly

ive had one clippin to death to see how it would go( for about 20 mins ) took the spankin and is still goin strong

aparrently if i remember correctly from the training with bill the sub is designed to slow down mechanicaly when clipped and the cooling is that good on em the rubber boot is not just cosmetic its to slow down the air movin over the voice coil

good to see the exile product is blowin away everyone who comes into contact with them

this doesnt make sense to me.. more airflow across the coil = better cooling.. why would you want to slow down the air moving through the coil?

not sure of the exact sciance sure morgan will explain bit the air was so fast it didnt have time to absorb the heat or somthin like that as i said if i remember correctly was a lot to remember that day

Rob,

Airflow is a little more complicated than just "moving air". We did some pretty intense heat analysis on the motor structure, airflow, and venting on all of our drivers.

The moral of the story is just "moving more air" through the motor structure isn't always effective.

Let me give you an everyday example, blowing out a candle. If you cup your hand and put it behind the flame a candle is much easier to blow out.

By controlling the air flow, you can redirect the intensity or cooling effectiveness. Now its definately a little more complicated in a woofer, but same principles of physics apply.

after giving it more thought, I realized that there is a point where airflow has diminishing returns..

for example, in a heat pump (which is a pretty good analogy to a speaker)

the more air you have flowing across the coils, the lower your delta will be, less airflow= higher delta.. its just about finding the right spot.

though in a speaker, obviously airflow through the coil is dependant on more than just the cfm of the fan, as its constantly changing.

In the case of the speaker, the airflow is directly related to the heat being produced. The more the assembly moves, the more heat it creates, and the more airflow it creates to cool itself. Ambient temperature probably also has an effect on the efficiency and thermal properties of the voice coil as well. The whole assembly actually would be effected to a degree at extreme temperatures, hot or cold.

I would think in a super hot car, the surround might become more compliant, and the suspension as well, and this may allow a hair more coil travel in the gap. This may or may not have negative effects, depending on the design of the woofer. Extreme cold will stiffen the moving parts and add resistance, both mechanical and electrical ( as they are related here).

At any rate, I am just trying to sound like I know what I am talking about. :) I will shortly have a new Exile system to enjoy and try and blow up!

Merlin,

As you know the E.U. is a PITA sometimes... ;)

We are in final stages of safety approval mandated by E.U. laws. They are already built, as soon as I get the thumbs up they are on their way to you....

Merlin,

8 XP12's is perfect for the X5, except you better make them DVCs to get it down to 1 ohm...

Those odyssey batteries are very impressive, I have used them on numerous setups in the past and they are very tough. Best battery I have ever used to date...
